Microsoft confirmed it today:
Windows 11 26H2, like Windows 25H2, will be an enablement package, so no full “OS swap” feature upgrade will be needed.
Given past announcements around Windows 11 26H1, released to support new ARM64 hardware, that mentioned that 26H1 cannot be upgraded to 26H2, that was really “foretold” earlier this year, as I discussed in my previous blog.
But that does guarantee that there will be a full “OS swap” feature upgrade in 2027, which will reunify Windows 11 26H1 and Windows 11 24H2/25H2/26H2. While there continue to be rumors about this becoming “Windows 12” it doesn’t really matter what it’s called, just be prepared for the feature upgrade. After two years of enablement packages, you need to make sure you haven’t forgotten how to do that…
