The number didn’t manage to flip over to 5 million while I was still awake, but it had passed that threshold this morning:

One other change that I made recently was to remove advertising from the blog. I had always paid the blog hosting costs out of my own pocket (a small price to pay to escape the Microsoft bureacracy where PR wanted to approve everything posted), but when I left Microsoft I added ads to the site via Automattic’s (the company behind WordPress.com) ad system to defray the costs. But this proved to be a pain — there are some real garbage ads that get served, and people don’t e-mail WordPress.com or Automattic about them, they e-mail me. I’d rather make zero from the blog that deal with that stuff. Hence, no more ads.
